Bridge over the Seine, Paris, France
The winter trees act as a frame for the two lamps on the bridge. Tiny figures crossing the bridge give scale and size. The bulding in the background are reduced to simple shapes without detail. The reflection of the brdige in the Seine is an important part of this composition. It suggests a grimy misty atmosphere so typical of Paris in winter.

Rainy Paris Street, France

Paris Street, France - 22" x 15"
Greys everywhere in this rainy Paris day. I use the three primary colours to mix either warm or cool greys. The warm brown foreground tree creates depth. The red awning adds a splash of local colour. Notice the two focal point figures are counter-changed light against dark, and dark against light for maximum impact. The tree foliage was stippled.

How to paint... Evian, France from hotel balcony

From my hotel balcony in August 2013, I painted a gloriously dramatic scene of typical French buildings, cars, people, lake and distant hills. Evian is a wonderful location. It was mid-afternoon and hot! This one is time lapsed. Enjoy.

Brilliant Light at Sea Palling, Norfolk

Sea Palling, Norfolk, England - 22" x 15"

I wanted to capture the brilliant light, shadows and atmosphere at Sea Palling, Norfolk. The counter-change of the church buildings works well, I think. Notice the lines in the poughed field, and the hedgerow leading the eye to the focal point. Painted on Saunders Waterford 300gms/140lb rough paper.
